Works and BookingsConference Of Strange ‘Fantastically Comic’ Broadway Baby‘Original, and truly hilarious…...This show is inventive, warm, and poignant.’ ★★★★★Three Weeks Magazine‘I feel as though I could just write the words “wow! Amazing! Incredible! Extraordinary! Clever!” over and over again’ ★★★★★edfringereview.com ‘Sarah Ruff is either a genius in the making or completely mad-probably both’ The Scotsman Set in a world full of modern technological contraptions, where the protagonist is a confused Cyborg. Sarah Ruff uses stand-up comedy, live Art and animation to describe a personal dilemma. She struggles to understand her ability as a creature that is able to reproduce. She explores this notion through part recorded, real telephone conversations with her mother and physical and verbal interaction with a series of projected images and diagrams. She believes that possibly her purpose in life is not to produce a dangerous, pointless and unfamiliar offspring because the world is over populated and full of danger, she is inadequate and life when broken down seems meaningless. At the heart of the work is a very human, comical and tragic response to the feeling of being disenfranchised to one’s own self and to the modern world. There is a strong visual concept within the work, where the use of technology and stark projected imagery in relation to the human presence stands as a metaphor to the ideas being explored. The company have been vigorous in there exploration and experimentation with interaction techniques with film and animation, developing new innovative approaches and materials and a strong aesthetic concept. The visuals and use of multi media has been highly commended in press ‘I have never seen such wonderfully weird images projected onto a power-point screen. The amount of detail and the impeccable timing of the changing shapes to fit with Ruff’s monologue were astounding.’ Edfringe review The piece was greatly inspired by Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto and Conversations with Andrew Clarke Author of Natural born Cyborgs. The work was developed with audience feedback through work-in-progress showing, maintaining that the work is accessible and appeals to a wide audience base and that the themes, and ideas explored have significant relevance to a contemporary audience.
